Our Basic Beliefs & Values
- CHRIST -CENTERED:
(Ephesians 2: 19-20) We are God's people and members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as our cornerstone. Tunnel Hill United Methodist Church exists to honor, glorify, and serve Jesus Christ. In all that we do, we seek to lift up Jesus Christ as Savior and Hope of the world. Our profession of faith in Jesus Christ is the one common bond among our church and the Rock of our faith.
- BIBLE-BASED:
(Psalms 119:105) Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Bible teaching permeates every program of Tunnel Hill United Methodist. We seek to live out the Scriptures in our lives because the Bible is God's Word for what we believe and do. We believe that the Holy Scriptures contain all things necessary to salvation. We focus on the gospel message believing Jesus died for your sins so that you can be his redeemed coworker now in what J:{e is doing in this world and can spend eternity with the one you are giving your life to in heaven when you die.
- A COMMUNITY OF JOY AND HOPE:
(Psalm 20:5) We will shout for joy and lift our banners in the name of the Lord! We gather in joyful worship as God's people. We go forth in his joy to bring hope to a troubled, hurting world. We want to be known in this community as a place of God's great joy and promises.
- A PASSION FOR MAKING DISCIPLES:
(Matthew 28:19-20) Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Tunnel Hill UMC seeks to grow disciples-believers who are learning and changing to be more like Jesus Christ. We desire to be a training ground of classes, support groups, relationships, and opportunities to grow in faith and practice.
- IMPACTING OUR WORLD WITH GOD'S LOVE:
(John 15:17) This is my commandment, that you love one another. We seek to impact and change our families, communities, and this world through the transforming power of God's love that is within each of us. We value changed lives over numerical growth and we count it a privilege to go in love to the least, the lost, the hurting, and the forgotten. We want to embody the love of God for all people in everything that we say and do.
- FUTURE ORIENTED:
(Jeremiah 29:11) For I know the plans I have for you ... to give you hope and a future. Our vision at Tunnel Hill United Methodist Church is to be future oriented. We look to the future unafraid of change and challenges because Jesus Christ has never (and will never) failed us. We seek to be on the cutting edge of outreach and new ministries so we can reach the unchurched and the next generation of believers.

Our Past...The Tunnel Hill United Methodist Church was organized about 1848, several years before the civil war. The first church building was erected shortly afterwards and during the civil war was used by federal troops as a stable for their horses and mules. The second church building was begun in 1893 and completed in 1894.
After the war, the church pulled out of the Methodist Conference and became the Methodist Episcopal Church South. In 1939 the Methodist Episcopal Church South and the Methodist Episcopal Church North merged and became the Methodist Church. Again in 1968, the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Church merged and became the United Methodist Church.
In 1954, we became a full time church. To fulfill a dream for a new church building a financial campaign was launched in January 1964. Construction began on September 4, 1964 and the building was completed on March 27, 1965. The first service was held the following day.
We also have a log constructed Fellowship Hall that was built in 1982. This building is used extensively by the church and community. Our Future... To be a church that continues to bring God's people closer to him and closer together. We want to continue to grow and be a blessing by reaching out to our community with the awesome truths about our Lord.
